Wow i dont even know where to start right now there is soo much to say from the last week!
So last week was mostly the same just a bunch of meetings before we left for the field which were super....hard to listen to because they were all in portuguese and the teachers spoke pretty fast. But they were all good for practice, the best was definitely the medical meeting with the Dilles who actually used to live in Brechenridge like 20 years ago and knew the Lewis's really well so they wanted me to tell the Lewis's they say hi, they are great i love them a ton! but they talked to us all about what to eat and how to be safe. Its funny because one thing that alll our leaders told us they ended with your senior companion will explain everything to you so it shouldnt be a problem...ha ill talk more about why thats a problem later. So this last week was good, and of course general conference was amazing and we got to see all 5 sessions which was way cool! I love all of our apostles they are great wonderful amazing men, all they do for the church is incredible! (by the way all question marks and caps dont work on these computers for some reason... sorry). On monday we finally got to go out into the city and give away book of mormons and prosilyte! it was and amazing experience! We went to a huge part of sao paulo it felt exactly like being in new york city except noboby spoke Engish and everyone kinda looked at us funny, but everyone was super nice. me and elder Erikson went into this big park, that was called a park but was more like a jungle in the middle of the city, huge trees everywhere and ppl sitting on benches not ding anything just waiting for me and my companion to recieve an incredible book! haha it was a awesome and everyone accepted and was way friendly, two of the people didnt even believe in god but still took the book! and afterward we stopped at McDonalds and ate a little haha yeah the only american fast food here of course is Micky Ds... so monday was a great day we took pictures with all our amazing teachers and leaders and got ready for the big next day! So tuesday moring the missionaries going to recife numbered 4 americans and 3 brazilians, we woke at 4 am and left for the airport at 5. we arrived in Recife around 11:30 and were picked up by President Lanius, he is brazillian but has a german type accent haha kinda funny, but he is truly an amazing man. driving to the mission home was pretty scary, the streets are pretty much do what you want to get where you need, motorcycles are driving whereever and people are crossing whereever, and cars have no resect for anything, its pretty insane. I immediately realize how hot recife is... super hot... arizona hot with humidity. so i guess not too bad for an arizonian but still pretty darn quinch (hot). The place where the mission home is and the recife mission office building is extremely poor. most of what i saw was extremely extremely poor, people just kinda everywhere trying to wash your windows and stuff. So we got to the mission home and Sis. Lanius cooked a delicious meal for us, it was so satisfying, and pretty much the only meal i had the whole day, luckily it was good! So after that we all went to the mission office and learned more about our missions and filled some more papers out. There was where President Lanius chose our companion for us and it was a truly sad goodbye for me E. Mully and E.Erikson. Ill probably think about them everyday. So my companion is Elder Sacilotto, who is a brazilian, and guess how much english he speaks....none!!! wow i realized how badly i knew the language as soon as we gave each other a big hug and couldnt really say anything meaningful to each other haha i was glad though and knew it would be a good thing in the long run. I asked him where our area is and he said he didnt know... which he really didn't, an american interpreter told me that he said it was an area we are helping reopen for missionaries. So we pulled our bags out of the building and down the street, literally on the street trying to figure out which bus to take. As soon as it started to rain we found the bus and somehow threw our stuff in and for the next hour i stood in the bus trying to communicate with my companion. we finally got off in a place that was extremely poor, i thought ok good these people with be prepared to hear the gospel, and also thinking that the place we were staying in would be in a nicer neighborhood, so we are lugging our stuff for what seemed liked forever and water is everywhere, i cant explain how poor this place is haha its crazy i never would have expected it to be like this so close to the ocean, oh by the way we are super close to the ocean, i saw it today from kinda far but we cant go on it for obvious reasons haha. anyways we lug our stuff into a scary looking dirt alley, and stop at an apartment complex. O real quick there are two other elders living with us, one is from utah...and ive heard him speak like 3 english words. i dont know if he forgot or what, but he's pretty much a brazillan his name is Elder Tracy, he's from Riverton and has been out for a little over a year...i think...he told me in portuguese so im not 100 percent sure. as soon as we opened the door into our new home for the next 11 weeks the first thing i thought was.... thank the lord i have a testimony. ( by the way after a day im already feeling completely different about everything). haha its funny now that i think and write about last night again, but it seriously was a huge shock to me. Its not the cleanest place in the world, and there isnt too much room, ill kinda of be living half in my suite case and half in the cupboard me and Elder Sacilotto are sharing, i dont have a desk which would be nice and without a fan i was sweating sweating sweating, oh and i had no idea what I was going to eat for the next couple meals, all together it was a pretty depressing feeling not being able to ask questions like i wanted to be dry....and eat. but! as soon as i took a shower it all changed and for some reason i felt sooo much better, right before i got in the shower i hung up a few things, got out my hymn book and sang Come Come Ye Saints and said a prayer thanking the Lord that i had a chance to be here, but would need a ton of help and comfort... that might sound weird or strange but it really felt good and soon after one of the other companions let us use his fan for the night, which without a fan my bed literally would have been soaking wet. the shower was amazing and the rest of the night was great. this morning i woke up and studied portuguese a little. i knew i had nothing to eat but was ready to not really eat anything till lunch. But i was blessed! and Elder Quaresma had made an omelet that he didnt want..haha seriously an omelet! and it tasted sooo good! After we all got ready we walked to our zone meeting at the church through a neighborhood that looked like it had gone through the vietnam war. the meeting was great and it was great talking a little to the other super nice missionaries! oh by the way not all the nieghborhoods look like that, the other parts look kind a like poorer parts of San Diego. But where we have been today looks pretty pretty bad, people in the ward are living in little concrete huts, horrible i feel so bad! we ate lunch at a members house that was super nice! i didnt catch her name but the meal was amazing! and the rest of the day weve been visiting members! anyways sorry i could only write this email. ill write to everyone else next monday because thats my pday! love you all!!!! Hurrah for Israel!!!
